I am a Cisco Fellow in the Voice Technology Group at Cisco Systems. There, I work in the IP Communications Business Unit, where my responsibilities are to set strategic technical direction for Cisco Call Manager, our IP PBX product. I previously worked in the Service Provider Technology group, setting direction for our service provider VoIP products. Before that, I was CTO of dynamicsoft, a New Jersey telecom software company that was acquired by Cisco in 2004.

I am active in the IETF. I am co-author of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), RFC 3261, and inventor of SIMPLE - SIP for presence and IM. I have also authored protocols such as STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP through NAT), TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT), and XCAP (XML Configuration Access Protocol). I served on the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) from 2004 to 2006. I am chair of the IP telephony working group and formerly co-chair of the SIP working group. I have authored over 30 patents and publications, 45 Internet RFCs, and numerous Internet Drafts in the area of multimedia communications over packet networks.

I am a frequent industry speaker, having given nearly 75 talks over the past 10 years at shows ranging from VoN, Upperside SIP, N+I and NGN. I have written a regular column in Communications Solutions magazine, and now do so for SIP Magazine. I am on the technical advisory boards of several telecom companies.

I was awarded the Pulver VoN Pioneer award in June of 2000 for my contributions to the VoIP industry. In May 2002, Technology Review Magazine named me one of the TR100 - the 100 most innovative technologists in the world under the age of 35. In October 2005, CRN Magazine named me one of their "Super Geeks" - 10 engineers who are casting larger-than-life shadows over the industry. TMC Internet Telephony magazine recently named me as one of the Top 100 Voices of IP communications.

I received my bachelors and masters degrees from M.I.T, and my PhD at Columbia University under the guidance of Prof. Henning Schulzrinne. Previously, I worked as a Member of Technical Staff in the High Speed Networks Research Department in Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories.
